The Payout Decision: Sharing the Wealth

Once a firm generates profits, it faces a fundamental question: What should it do with that money? The firm can retain earnings to fund future growth, or it can distribute cash back to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. This is the payout decision — and it's more complex than it sounds.

Why the Decision Is Hard

Several interacting factors make payout policy one of the most nuanced decisions in corporate finance:
